iTunes is dead. Apple at WWDC 2019 announced that it will be retiring iTunes after close to two decades with three new apps - Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV. The end of iTunes had been foreseen for a while considering Apple's shift in focus on Apple Music and other new services. The three new apps will be seen with the next version of macOS, called .
iTunes was a one-stop destination for music, TV and podcasts, but Apple has decided to split it up into three new apps. The music part of iTunes will be handled by Apple Music, while the movies and TV shows part of it will be taken over by the Apple TV app and podcasts will get its own dedicated app as well.
Apple took a dig at itself by accepting that iTunes became too crowded for its own good. For a platform that was originally intended for music (storing and listening) and was a crucial platform for iPod users, iTunes expanded to include videos, podcasts, e-books and eventually became criticised for being bloated.

By replacing iTunes or rather splitting it up into three new apps, Apple will be able to offer a streamlined and focussed experience for each service. It will also improve continuity with iOS and iPadOS as these apps exist on the iPhone and iPad as well.
It makes a lot of sense for Apple to push for these three new apps on the Mac as the company looks to dig its claws deeper into the entertainment sector. For those wondering how they will sync their iPhone or iPod without iTunes, Apple mentioned that users will not see an app pop up but will instead be able to synch their device through the sidebar in Finder.
